My Testimony...

In February 2008, For Goodness Sake was founded as a result of a spiritual journey. During the 2008 Lenten season, I participated in a forty day partial Corporate fast (meaning our entire church was encouraged to participate). During the fast, we were instructed to refrain from eating meat, poultry, seafood or any product containing meat (dairy, eggs, etc).  Refined sugars, artificial additives and preservatives, and sweets were all forbidden during the fast. We could have only all natural foods that either grew on trees or from the earth. No white flour or products containing white flour was permitted. We were encouraged to drink only water and 100% juice.

Honestly, the very thought of it was...extreme, to say the least. I have to admit, before the fast I had a difficult time conceptualizing giving up all these foods, foods that were a part of my everyday diet. But, I felt a strong desire to participate. After praying for weeks, the fast started and I prepared for a difficult feat, but I was determined to see it through. I wanted to do this in obedience and love for God.  And you know what... I really believe He honored that.

At the risk of sounding peculiar, the fast was not difficult for me. I enjoyed it in fact. I was eating new dishes that I would have never considered trying before the fast. I was eating new vegetables and all kinds of healthy stuff. I discovered great tasting healthy alternatives. It was the best! My life was transformed. I had a new beginning, a new perspective. For the first time in a long time I was energetic, I wasn’t experiencing mood swings or bouts of depression. I felt ambitious and driven. I had a level of focus that I couldn’t recall experiencing in years.

And I learned something that I would be remised in not sharing. When you do something in honor of God, He will bless what you do and it will flourish, prosper, and succeed. I learned that God is still in the business of performing miracles to those who are willing to be obedient.  He gave me the desires of my heart, desires that I didn’t even know I had. During the fast, I got in touch with my creative side again. Following the fast’s guidelines I developed an all-natural snack that really helped to satisfy my cravings. And to my surprise, everybody loved it! Here I was, a person who didn’t even bake, creating something that people loved and felt good about eating. I felt strongly lead to take it to the next level. I settled on a name, got a business license, insurance, and contacted the Michigan Department of Agriculture. I got into a commercial kitchen, obtained my food regulations license and started on my way. 

It’s been over 2 years and I’m still in business. So far, my product is in a couple of stores and for the most part, I still generate enough money for the business to pay for itself and enough excitement to keep me determined. But the miracle of this has nothing to do with money and success for me. It is the AWESOMENESS of a God who made something out of absolutely nothing. I remain in awe.
